Real Salt Lake drew San Jose 1-1 on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at America First Field after Jack Jasinski's 94th-minute volley erased what had been RSL's best performance in weeks.
The equalizer denied RSL two points in the MLS playoff race. The club sits at 9-14-6 with 33 points, 11th in the Western Conference, according to the RSL match report.
RSL outshot San Jose 22-16 and put eight shots on target to the Earthquakes' two. Head coach Pablo Mastroeni praised the effort despite the result.
"It's just such a stroke of bad fortune 'cause the guys tonight I thought were excellent," Mastroeni told KSL Sports.
The breakthrough came in the 79th minute. Defender Luc de Fougerolles, a 20-year-old Canadian international on loan from Fulham FC, hammered a driven shot past goalkeeper Angus Gunn for his first RSL goal. Aiden Hezarkhani and Juan Manuel Sanabria had the assists.
The celebration was short-lived. De Fougerolles collapsed immediately after the strike, clutching his right knee. Medical staff rushed onto the field, and he was replaced by DeAndre Yedlin in the 82nd minute. He hobbled off under his own power, applauding the crowd on his way to the bench.
Mastroeni said afterward that the injury did not look good and that de Fougerolles needed help getting into the locker room. The coach described the defender's impact across his first two RSL appearances as transformational, calling him "an impossible player to replace."
De Fougerolles had set the tone from the opening whistle, hitting the right post with a first-time effort off a Saba Lobjanidze free kick in the 11th minute. He repeatedly joined the attack from his center-back position and raced back to make defensive plays. Kobi Henry and Phillip Quinton matched his intensity across the back line.
RSL controlled the first half without scoring, then poured forward after the break. Noel Caliskan forced a save with a header in the 49th minute. Sergi Solans tested Gunn with another header. Henry's sliding volley from five yards out in the 62nd minute sailed just over the crossbar with a defender dragging him down.
Even after taking the lead, RSL had chances to extend it. Stijn Spierings fired wide in the 84th minute. Zach Booth forced a save in stoppage time, and Ari Piol's rebound was blocked.
Then came the 94th minute. Timo Werner, a second-half substitute, sent a ball across RSL's penalty area. Sanabria attempted to clear it, but his touch popped the ball into the air. Jasinski met it with a volley into the far corner.
Mastroeni said RSL had surrendered space earlier in the sequence but called the final bounce extraordinarily unfortunate.
RSL travels to face Sporting Kansas City on Saturday, Oct. 17. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. MT on Apple TV.
