Alta, Hillcrest win big; Jordan shut out again

Xavier Cocci's 5-yard touchdown run with 2:10 left in the fourth quarter capped a 13-12 comeback for the Alta Hawks over Bingham on Thursday, Aug. 20, giving Alta a 2-0 start to the season.

On Friday, Aug. 21, Hillcrest quarterback K'Von Houston threw five touchdown passes in a 53-7 demolition of Deer Creek, while Jordan absorbed a second consecutive shutout, falling 45-0 at Summit Academy.

Alta 13, Bingham 12

The Hawks trailed 12-0 heading into the second half at Alta High School. Bingham's Kash Dawson hit Chance Marti on a 3-yard scoring pass in the second quarter, and Tovo Paea punched in a 3-yard run in the third to build what looked like a comfortable cushion.

Alta answered.

Treven Cooke scored on a 2-yard run with 1:33 left in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 12-6. Then Cocci found the end zone on his late fourth-quarter carry, and Madden McCallister's extra point provided the winning margin.

It was Alta's second straight rivalry win over Bingham, according to KSL Sports. The Miners dropped to 0-2.

Hillcrest 53, Deer Creek 7

Houston and wide receiver Alani Latu put on a clinic at Hillcrest High School on Friday, Aug. 21. Latu caught four of Houston's five touchdown passes, including a 54-yarder early in the first quarter, a 12-yard score with 2:34 left in the first, and an 18-yard connection in the third quarter. Houston also rushed for two 7-yard touchdowns in the first half.

The Huskies led 19-7 after one quarter and scored in all four periods. Deer Creek's only points came on a 6-yard pass from Kai Betsinger to Jake Woolstenhulme with 27 seconds left in the first half. Hillcrest's defense blanked the Riverhawks after the break.

After opening with a 40-0 loss to Desert Hills on Aug. 14, the bounce-back moved Hillcrest to 1-1.

Jordan 0, Summit Academy 45

The Beetdiggers have yet to score a point in 2026. Summit Academy quarterback Rigby Young threw for three touchdowns and caught another, while receiver Beckham Meredith hauled in two scoring passes in the lopsided nonregion win.

Zealand Hannemann's 75-yard blocked-kick return for a touchdown in the second quarter pushed the Bears' halftime lead to 32-0. Jordan (0-2) has been outscored 80-0 through two games after also falling 35-0 to Canyon View in Week 1.
