Juniors and seniors across Canyons School District can apply starting Monday, Nov. 2 for Utah's Seal of Biliteracy, a credential added to their high school diplomas and transcripts.
The application window closes Saturday, Jan. 16, 2027, according to a district announcement posted Oct. 20.
The seal is a designation from the Utah State Board of Education. It recognizes students who demonstrate proficiency in English and at least one other language. Students must show skills in speaking, listening, writing and reading in both languages, according to district graduation requirements.
Interest has surged. The number of Canyons students earning the seal has more than tripled, from 90 recipients in the 2017–2018 school year to more than 330, the district said. The announcement did not specify which school year the higher figure represents.
"Your multilingual skills are something to celebrate — and something that could give you an edge after graduation," said Amy Gutiérrez, a specialist in the district's Instructional Supports Department.
Gutiérrez said the seal appeals to students who learned a language through the district's dual language immersion program, from family members at home, or through other paths of study. Canyons operates 10 elementary schools with immersion programs in Spanish, French and Mandarin Chinese. Those programs continue through high school, where students can take Advanced Placement and college-level language courses.
Students apply online. The district encourages juniors to start the process early because it gives them more time to complete qualifying exams. In many cases, students have already passed a qualifying test and need no further testing, the district said. For those who do need testing, exams are administered at each high school during the school year.
Brighton High School senior Mary Ann Jensen was among the Class of 2026 graduates who earned the seal, the district noted in a June profile of graduating seniors. Jensen, who published her first book at age 11, also served as Speech Captain and was named a Sterling Scholar.
Families with questions can contact their school's counseling center. Hillcrest High School lists Seal of Biliteracy questions among the services available through its counseling office at (801) 826-6020.
