The Deseret News named Hillcrest senior quarterback K'Von Houston its Week 11 football athlete of the week after a season that has rewritten the school's record books.

Houston leads all of Class 5A with 2,673 passing yards and 31 passing touchdowns through nine games, according to the Deseret News. He has added 427 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns. He holds Hillcrest's single-season and career records in passing yards, passing touchdowns, total yards and total touchdowns.

The honor, published Monday, Oct. 12, caps a three-game stretch in which the Huskies outscored opponents 150-14. Houston threw four touchdowns in a 49-0 rout of Taylorsville on Thursday, Oct. 8, completing 21 of 28 passes for 288 yards. The blowout triggered the UHSAA's 44-point mercy rule.

Hillcrest head coach Robby Kaelin told the Deseret News that Houston has developed over four years into a quarterback who reads defenses, gets the ball out quickly and extends plays when the pocket breaks down.

"We have a lot of great playmakers on our team this season, but none has been more vital to our team's success than K'Von," Kaelin said.

The statewide nod is the latest in a string of recognition for Houston. The Canyons School District noted after Week 7 that he had appeared on the Deseret News Top 20 Performers list for the third time, following a six-touchdown, 312-yard performance in a 48-8 win over West Jordan on Sept. 25.

Kaelin's offense is built around Houston's arm. The coach has said his game plan calls for throwing roughly 85 percent of the time.

The approach has powered a turnaround. Hillcrest's only losses came in a 40-0 season opener against Desert Hills on Aug. 14 and a 55-6 region defeat to West on Sept. 18. The Huskies have won three straight since, according to MaxPreps, and sit at 7-2 overall and 5-1 in Region 4, good for second place.

Taft Ashby opened the scoring against Taylorsville with a 7-yard blocked-kick recovery in the first quarter. Houston then connected with Tyler Ashby for two of his four touchdown passes.

Hillcrest closes the regular season Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m. at Kearns in a Region 4 matchup. Playoff seedings have not been announced.
