Jordan High School is throwing a homecoming week packed with parades, fireworks and a football game to mark what the school is calling its 120th anniversary.
The Sandy school's homecoming announcement lays out five days of activities running Sept. 8–13 under the theme "Dancing Through the Decades." Each day carries a different dress-up era, from a Black and White day inspired by the Roaring '20s on Wednesday, Sept. 9, to Y2K fashion on Friday, Sept. 11.
Tuesday, Sept. 8, is a no-school day. The action starts Wednesday with the Powder Puff Game.
Thursday, Sept. 10, is the big evening. A homecoming parade around the school begins at 7 p.m., followed by a ribbon cutting for new facilities at 7:30 p.m. and a night assembly at 7:45 p.m. The night closes with fireworks and the traditional burning of the J at 8:30 p.m. The school has not specified which new facilities will be unveiled.
Friday brings a farmers market during the lunch hour. On Saturday, Sept. 12, a second farmers market opens at 5:30 p.m. ahead of the football game. Homecoming royalty will be announced at halftime. The homecoming dance follows on Sunday, Sept. 13, at 8 p.m.
Jordan High, at 95 Beetdigger Blvd., is part of the Canyons School District. The Beetdiggers name traces back to the sugar beet farms that once surrounded the school. Until about 1950, classes were canceled for a week or two each October so students could help with the harvest, according to the school's Wikipedia entry.
The school's anniversary branding implies a founding year of 1906, though multiple historical references, including a centennial celebration in 2007, place the founding in 1907. Either way, Jordan High ranks among the oldest public high schools in Utah. The football opponent for the homecoming game has not been announced.
