Sandy City Council received two road safety presentations at its Tuesday, Aug. 18 meeting that could reshape how residents navigate two problem corridors: the 11000 South and 1000 East intersection near Alta High School and the Creek Road pedestrian corridor shared with Cottonwood Heights.

No votes were taken on either item.

Both were informational reports, meaning the council heard findings but did not direct staff to act.

The 11000 South and 1000 East intersection has been under scrutiny since January 2026, when a pedestrian was struck and killed by a drunk driver while crossing the street. Sandy installed lighted flashing stop signs at each corner as an interim fix.

Since then, the city assembled a working group of neighborhood stakeholders, city engineers and independent traffic consultants to evaluate long-term solutions, according to Mayor Monica Zoltanski, who detailed the effort in an Aug. 15 Facebook post. Sandy's in-house engineers concluded a roundabout would be the safest option and secured partial funding, Zoltanski said.

The city also hired outside consultant Methods Engineering to conduct an independent analysis. Methods Engineering reached the same conclusion: build a roundabout.

Methods Engineering presented those findings at a community meeting Aug. 10 at the Alta High Performing Arts Center before bringing the study to the full council on Aug. 18.

Zoltanski said the council would further examine the roundabout option and discuss how to proceed in coming weeks.

Creek Road pedestrian study

The second presentation covered the Creek Road Safety and Pedestrian Crossing Study, a joint effort between Sandy and Cottonwood Heights. The study focuses on Creek Road from Union Park Avenue to 3500 East, with the goal of identifying safe crossing locations near Oakdale Elementary School and other high-traffic points.

Sandy and Cottonwood Heights announced the partnership earlier this year and held at least one open house to gather resident input. KMYU reported May 25 that both cities were soliciting public feedback on crossing improvements.

What's next

Neither presentation came with a specific vote date or timeline. Zoltanski indicated the roundabout discussion would continue in coming weeks, but no meeting has been scheduled for a formal decision on either corridor.
