A 5-year-old girl died after another child shot her at a Sandy home Saturday, Aug. 29, police said.

Sandy police responded about 1 p.m. to a report of a shooting near 200 W. Eastgate Drive, in the area of 8800 South, according to KSL. Paramedics transported the girl to a local hospital in life-threatening condition due to a gunshot wound. She later died from her injuries.

Sandy Police Sgt. Michael Olsen said officers spoke with the people involved and investigated the scene.

"We were able to determine that this was a tragic accident involving young children," Olsen said.

The department has not released the age of the child who fired the gun. Olsen also declined to say how the child obtained the firearm. As of Monday, Aug. 31, police had not said whether they would screen potential charges against anyone.

Olsen urged residents to be careful with firearms and offered condolences to the grieving family.

A Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health analysis of 2024 data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found gunshots were the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 17 nationally, as the Salt Lake Tribune reported.
