A 16-year-old boy died Wednesday, Aug. 19, after falling more than 100 feet while hiking the Devil's Castle Trail near Alta, the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office said in a written statement.

The teen was dead when first responders reached him, according to KSL. The sheriff's office described the fall distance as an estimate, saying the hiker was "believed to have fallen more than 100 feet."

Search and rescue teams were dispatched to the trail at approximately 7:55 p.m. Wednesday, according to ABC4. The Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue Team, the Alta Marshal's Office and the Utah Department of Public Safety Aero Bureau all responded to the scene, Gephardt Daily reported.

The victim's name has not been released.

Devil's Castle sits in a high-alpine area above Alta in Little Cottonwood Canyon, roughly 25 miles southeast of Sandy. The loop trail runs 3.5 to 4 miles and gains about 1,500 feet in elevation, taking hikers past Cecret Lake before climbing into exposed ridgeline terrain that requires rock scrambling, according to KUTV. The route includes sections of steep, exposed rock that make portions of the hike particularly technical.

The sheriff's office extended condolences to the hiker's family in its written statement. No further details about the circumstances of the fall have been released, and no follow-up briefing has been announced.
