The ZZ Top and Cheap Trick concert scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 18, at the Sandy Amphitheater was canceled after the band announced drummer Frank Beard had died the night before.

He was 77.

Beard died Monday, Aug. 17, while in hospice care at his ranch in Richmond, Texas, with family at his side, according to a statement on the band's website. He had been ZZ Top's drummer for 56 years.

The Sandy Amphitheater confirmed the cancellation on its Facebook page, telling ticket holders that Ticketmaster purchasers will receive automatic refunds. Anyone who bought tickets through third-party resellers such as StubHub, SeatGeek or VividSeats must contact their point of purchase directly.

The show would have been the first date of ZZ Top's Big One! Tour, with Cheap Trick as the opening act. The 2,750-capacity amphitheater at 1300 E. 9400 South had been set for a 7 p.m. start.

Beard had stepped away from the tour in early August due to health issues, with replacement drummer Michael Monahan filling in. The band also canceled its Aug. 5 Hollywood Bowl show over Beard's health, ABC4 reported. In 2025, he temporarily left the road for foot and ankle problems.

ZZ Top founder Billy Gibbons called Beard "one of the most naturally innovative drummers and a great and true son of Texas" in a statement posted Aug. 18, adding that Beard's "signature backbeat was key to keeping ZZ on top." Gibbons said the band would carry on as Beard wished.

ZZ Top also canceled its Wednesday, Aug. 19, show in Colorado Springs before planning to resume the tour Aug. 22-23 at ACL Live in Austin, Texas, with Monahan on drums.

Beard joined ZZ Top in 1970, debuting at the Knight of Columbus Hall in Beaumont, Texas. He was the only member of the famously bearded band who never sported one. Gibbons once joked that "Frank's beard is on his driver's license." When ZZ Top was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, Beard reflected: "All I have to say is that most of my life has been a pleasant surprise, and so is this."

He is the second original ZZ Top member to die in recent years. Bassist Dusty Hill died in 2021 at age 72 and was replaced by his longtime bass tech, Elwood Francis.
