Alta High School students eyeing a spot on the Hawks swim team can start making their case Monday, Sept. 21, when open clinics begin at Dimple Dell Recreation Center.

The school announced the clinic window runs through Friday, Oct. 16. Sessions are held Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 to 5 p.m., and Fridays from 2 to 3:30 p.m. The school urged prospective swimmers to attend as many sessions as possible.

Alta's campus sits at 11055 South 1000 East in Sandy, and Dimple Dell Recreation Center is a short walk away. The center serves as the team's home base for practices and meets throughout the season.

The clinics come after a strong season for the Hawks. The boys team finished fourth at the 5A state championship, and the girls placed eighth. Alta went 8-3 in dual meets.

Five team records fell along the way. Blake Abney broke records in the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke. Ilyan Manriquez set a new mark in the 50 freestyle. Noah Stout broke the 100 breaststroke record at regionals before Abney broke it again at state.

The 200 medley relay team of Abney, Stout, Sawyer Mortensen and Manriquez also set a record. So did the 200 freestyle relay squad of Mortensen, Orion Gray, Quinn Beeny and Manriquez. Those results were reported in The Hawkeye, Alta's student newspaper, in May.

"The team really becomes like your family," swimmer Hannah Bemel told The Hawkeye in May when asked why students should join.

The head coach, known to swimmers as Coach K, leads the program with assistant coaches Hallie and Jack. Coach K starts every practice with about 15 minutes of stretching and has eliminated Saturday sessions. Swimming is a winter sport at Alta, and the clinics serve as the on-ramp before formal tryouts.

The school has not announced a formal tryout date following the Oct. 16 clinic window.
