Zavier Gozo is a Premier League player.

Real Salt Lake confirmed Tuesday, Aug. 18, that its club-record transfer of the 19-year-old homegrown winger to Crystal Palace is complete, sending the West Valley City native to London on a reported five-year deal worth approximately $15 million. Gozo becomes the first Utah-born player to compete in England's top flight.

"It's difficult to put into words what this Club, the fans and this community mean to me," Gozo said in a statement released by RSL. "As a Homegrown kid from Utah, Real Salt Lake has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. This is home."

The deal caps a rapid rise for a teenager who joined RSL's Academy at 14, turned professional at 15 and made his MLS debut at the LA Galaxy in October 2023. As we reported Aug. 11, Gozo completed his medical in London last week, but the transfer was not formally registered until Tuesday.

RSL's official announcement noted the club will retain a significant percentage of any future transfer fee. The reported $15 million price tag, per The Guardian, would surpass RSL's previous record sale of Colombian winger Andrés Gómez for $11 million in 2024.

Utah roots, global stage

Gozo was born in West Valley City and raised in Eagle Mountain by his mother, Esther, as a single parent. He was one of only a handful of Utahns at RSL's Academy and the only Utah player from his age group to break into the first team.

His 2026 season made the transfer inevitable. Gozo led RSL in goal contributions with six goals and five assists in 16 MLS appearances, became the youngest player in club history to score a brace (19 years, 54 days old, in a 3-0 win over Houston on May 13), and earned selection to the MLS All-Star First XI as the first Utah native ever voted into the starting lineup.

RSL head coach Pablo Mastroeni saw it coming. "For me he's a unicorn," Mastroeni told KSL Sports in June after Gozo's All-Star selection. "Very rarely do you have a guy that is as fast as he is that can maintain the speed and endurance over 90 minutes. I'm saying Premier League. I'm saying any league in the world."

What RSL loses

Sporting Director Kurt Schmid said Gozo earned the opportunity through relentless work ethic and character, calling the milestone a credit to the Academy pipeline that also produced All-Stars Justen Glad and Aaron Herrera.

Assistant Sporting Director Tony Beltran, a former RSL player who has worked with the Academy for nearly seven years, called Gozo a model of the club's developmental approach, saying the state of Utah will always be home for him.

Gozo's five combined game-winning goals and assists in 2026 rank second all-time in that MLS category, trailing only Diego Fagundez's eight for the 2013 New England Revolution. His likeness appeared on an I-15 billboard outside America First Field in Sandy.

At Crystal Palace, Gozo will train alongside U.S. men's national team defender Chris Richards under new manager Pierre Sage. He remains eligible for the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup.

What's next for RSL

RSL (8-6-4, 28 points, seventh in the Western Conference) hosts FC Dallas on Wednesday, Aug. 19, at 7:30 p.m. at America First Field in its first home match without Gozo. The club then travels to Commerce City, Colorado, to face Club León in the Leagues Cup quarterfinal on Tuesday, Aug. 25, at 8:30 p.m.
