Hillcrest finished second in Region 4 boys golf with a 328.0 team stroke average, wrapping up the regular season behind champion Cyprus High at 301.0. Alta placed sixth in Region 6 at 315.9, completing region play in a field led by Skyline at 287.6.

Both Sandy-area programs now turn to the 5A state tournament at Bountiful Ridge Golf Course, scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, according to final standings reported by the Deseret News.

Jack Burrell paced Hillcrest all season with a 79.9 stroke average, sixth among Region 4 individuals. Teammate Jack Shirley shot a 76 in the final region tournament Monday, Oct. 5, at Overlake Golf Course.

West Jordan (330.0) and Taylorsville (337.0) rounded out the top four in Region 4, with Hunter, Kearns, Granger and West filling the remaining spots.

Alta's 315.9 average put the Hawks behind Skyline (287.6), Olympus (293.4), Brighton (293.8), Woods Cross (294.8) and Viewmont (302.0) in Region 6. Bountiful trailed Alta at 329.1.

No Alta golfer cracked the top tier of Region 6's individual standings, which were led by Skyline's Perry Shaffer at a 69.3 average. Shaffer shot a 66 in the final Region 6 tournament Sept. 28 at The Ridge Golf Course.

Eight teams across 5A finished within eight strokes of one another this season. West Field posted the lowest team average in the classification at 285.8, and seven individual golfers averaged in the 60s.

Skyline enters the state tournament as the program to watch. The Eagles have won six of the past seven 5A state titles, including last year's championship, which came down to the final hole.

Hillcrest and Alta are scheduled to compete Monday and Tuesday at Bountiful Ridge in the two-day state tournament.
