Hillcrest's Joshya Yerrapureddy and Nivedita Bakshi each won individual state titles Saturday, Oct. 3, at the UHSAA 5A girls tennis championship. Their wins powered the Huskies to a runner-up team finish at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City.
Hillcrest totaled 44 points, one ahead of third-place Skyline (43) and 12 behind team champion Woods Cross (56). Woods Cross claimed its third consecutive 5A title. Timpview (28) and Bountiful (15) rounded out the top five.
Yerrapureddy captured the No. 2 singles crown. Bakshi won the No. 3 singles bracket. Individual match scores for those two finals were not available.
The Huskies made it count.
Hillcrest's Luciana Gonzalez reached the No. 1 singles final before falling to Woods Cross sophomore Lyla Bergeson 6-1, 6-3. Bergeson, the top seed, had not dropped a game in her first four matches. She won her second straight No. 1 singles title.
Three Huskies competing in singles finals is a striking concentration of talent for a program the Deseret News described as fielding "only a few fans, and even fewer players" at the tournament.
Woods Cross coach Jim Romera praised the competition across the field. "It was great to watch such quality tennis and a high level of sportsmanship," Romera said Saturday.
Saturday's championship capped the fall tennis season for Hillcrest. No additional UHSAA postseason events are scheduled for girls tennis.
