Hillcrest senior quarterback K'Von Houston threw five touchdown passes and passed for 312 yards as the Huskies routed West Jordan 48-8 in a Region 4 game Friday, Sept. 25.
The win pushed Hillcrest to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in region play, keeping the Huskies in second place in 5A Region 4. According to the Deseret News, the program could be headed toward its first winning season since 2003.
It was never close.
Houston, who has been in head coach Robby Kaelin's system for much of Kaelin's four years leading the program, completed 24 of 36 passes. He has thrown 22 touchdown passes through seven games this season.
The Huskies needed just five plays to score on their opening drive. Houston connected with Keli'i Batimana on a 31-yard touchdown pass to make it 7-0. He then found Alani Latu twice on 4-yard scoring strikes in the first quarter, and Hillcrest led 21-0 before West Jordan could answer.
Levi Lavaka caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from Houston in the second quarter and added a 46-yard fumble-recovery touchdown. Collin Ence caught a 10-yard scoring pass from Houston in the second quarter and a 26-yard touchdown in the third.
The Huskies led 41-8 at halftime, per the Deseret Sports box score.
West Jordan, which entered the game tied with Hillcrest for second in region, managed its lone score before the break on a 1-yard run by Bryan Yang. The Jaguars fell to 2-5 overall.
Kaelin told the Deseret News after the game that the Huskies were ready to respond and took advantage of every opportunity, though he said they didn't quite finish it. He told the paper his game plan calls for throws about 85% of the time, and when Houston is accurate, the Huskies can score from anywhere on the field.
The Huskies have scored 236 points through seven games, per MaxPreps.
The turnaround extends beyond the scoreboard. In late July, Houston was among more than half the Hillcrest roster who volunteered to help residents displaced by a Midvale apartment fire, as Fox 13 reported. Kaelin told the station at the time that teaching players to be good people off the field matters as much as winning on it.
Hillcrest travels to Cyprus on Friday, Oct. 2, then hosts Taylorsville on Thursday, Oct. 8, and visits Kearns on Wednesday, Oct. 14. All three are 7 p.m. region games.
