Real Salt Lake outscored opponents 7-0 across back-to-back Leagues Cup shutouts at America First Field, and the club says that stretch is the most dominant consecutive performance in its 22-year, 850-game history. Now the Sandy-based squad carries that defensive identity into a quarterfinal against Liga MX top seed Club León on Tuesday, Aug. 25, at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado, with an 8:30 p.m. MT kickoff on Apple TV.
The defensive transformation took shape during the same stretch that Utah native Zavier Gozo finalized his $15 million transfer to Crystal Palace, a club-record sale we reported Aug. 11. With Gozo's departure imminent, RSL rolled to a 4-0 rout of Atlante on Aug. 8 and a 3-0 dismantling of FC Juárez on Aug. 11 to clinch the No. 4 MLS seed with a 2-0-1 record and a tournament-best +7 goal differential.
Head coach Pablo Mastroeni credited a simplified pressing system for the turnaround. Before the Juárez match, he explained that the coaching staff narrowed RSL's press trigger to one side of the field, reducing the number of players who must read and react simultaneously.
"Instead of occupying the brains of four players, we're now occupying the brains of two players in our defensive press, and then everything else stays the same," Mastroeni said on Aug. 11, in KSL Sports' pre-match coverage. "And I thought that's brought a lot of clarity to the group to be more cohesive."
After the Juárez win that night, Mastroeni called the shift a full-team "click," saying the defensive mentality had been "the biggest takeaway" from the two shutouts.
RSL President of Soccer Operations Jason Kreis joined Mastroeni on KUTV's "Talkin' Real" podcast on Aug. 12 to discuss Gozo's departure and the club's direction going forward.
Depth has filled the gap. RSL used 19 different starters across three Leagues Cup group matches, with goals from six players. Lineker Rodrigues signed his first-team contract on Aug. 10 and scored against Juárez the next day. Pablo Ruiz returned to the starting lineup and scored against both Tigres and Atlante before setting up RSL's opener against Juárez. Sergi Solans leads the club with 12 goals across all competitions in 2026.
Veteran defender DeAndre Yedlin, speaking on Aug. 15 ahead of the Minnesota match, echoed Mastroeni's message. He said the defensive improvement comes from the entire roster, not just the back line and goalkeeper Rafael Cabral, who has played every minute of RSL's 61 games over the past two seasons.
The shutout streak peaked at 264 minutes before Minnesota's Pereyra equalized in the 89th minute on Aug. 15, ending the run. RSL conceded just two goals in four home matches since Aug. 4, with those goals coming 353 minutes apart. In MLS play, however, RSL remains winless in its past five league matches (0-2-3), sitting seventh in the West at 8-6-4.
León enters the quarterfinal with a perfect 3-0-0 record and nine points. The clubs have met once before: RSL won 3-1 in the 2023 Leagues Cup Round of 32 at America First Field after Danny Musovski scored twice in the final 20 minutes.
Leagues Cup rules assigned the quarterfinal to a neutral MLS site because León does not hold hosting privileges; America First Field is also booked by a concert on Aug. 25. The winner advances to the semifinal on Sept. 1 or 2, with the champion, runner-up and third-place finisher each qualifying for the 2027 Concacaf Champions Cup.
RSL visits Orlando City on Saturday, Aug. 22, at 5:30 p.m. MDT on Apple TV before heading to Denver.
