Real Salt Lake outscored three Liga MX opponents 8-1 across a Leagues Cup homestand that ended with back-to-back shutouts, and now the club turns that defensive edge toward a Western Conference rival Saturday, Aug. 15, when Minnesota United visits America First Field.

RSL finished Leagues Cup phase one with seven points on two wins and a penalty-shootout loss, a significant overperformance for a squad seeded 30th of 36 entrants. Manager Pablo Mastroeni pointed to the defensive transformation after Tuesday's 3-0 rout of FC Juárez.

"The mentality of this group defensively, there's been a click, a change in these last two games, and that's been the biggest takeaway," Mastroeni said.

Goalkeeper Rafael Cabral recorded consecutive clean sheets for the first time since July 2025, making two saves against Juárez while the back line limited the visitors to just two shots on target from 14 attempts and only 16 touches in the attacking box.

Solans steps up as Gozo departs

The club's attacking load shifts after the sale of 19-year-old winger Zavier Gozo to Crystal Palace in a club-record $15 million deal reported Aug. 10. Gozo, the Eagle Mountain native who scored six goals and added five assists in 16 MLS matches this season, had spoken openly about his ambitions. As we reported Aug. 11, the deal is the largest outgoing transfer in RSL history.

"I'm always focused on the present and what we're doing," Gozo said July 30 after his MLS All-Star debut in Charlotte. "All my teammates and the family we have there are counting on me and everyone else to win games and make a run in the playoffs."

That playoff push now belongs to Sergi Solans, the rookie forward from Lleida, Spain, who has seven goals and three assists in 17 MLS appearances. Solans entered as a second-half substitute against Juárez and scored in the 53rd minute off a Noel Caliskan through ball. Morgan Guilavogui converted a 25th-minute penalty, and Lineker Rodrigues dos Santos chipped home the third in the 68th minute off a DeAndre Yedlin assist.

Minnesota brings a familiar headache

Saturday's match carries extra weight. RSL has not beaten Minnesota in the clubs' last five meetings, managing just two goals across that stretch while being shut out four times. Minnesota claimed both 2025 meetings, including a 3-1 win in Sandy last August.

The Loons enter on a more modest Leagues Cup showing: a 1-1-1 record and four points, including a 1-1 draw with Atlante on Aug. 11. Forward Kelvin Yeboah (eight goals in 14 appearances as of May) and Argentine attacker Tomás Chancalay remain Minnesota's primary threats. Head coach Cameron Knowles, a former RSL draft pick who logged 346 minutes in Claret and Cobalt during the club's inaugural 2005 season, returns to Sandy.

Standings and what's next

As of the Aug. 1 MLS standings, RSL sits fifth in the West with 27 points (8-6-3), three behind fourth-place Houston. Minnesota is 10th at 24 points (6-6-6). A win Saturday would widen that gap and keep RSL within striking distance of a home playoff match.

RSL's home record across all competitions in 2026 entering the Leagues Cup homestand stood at 8-1-0, outscoring visitors 22-9. Saturday's kickoff time had not been confirmed as of Aug. 12.
