A Sandy house fire that broke out Monday, Aug. 3, caused an estimated $500,000 in damage and left one resident still hospitalized with burn injuries, Sandy Fire Deputy Chief Chris Aston confirmed.

The fire was first reported at 2:20 a.m. Both residents were injured while trying to evacuate their pets from the burning home.

"One cat was killed in the fire," Aston said.

One of the residents uses a wheelchair and had to be rescued from the house by his wife, according to Fox 13. Both sustained burn injuries and were transported to local hospitals for treatment. One has since been released. The other remains hospitalized.

Neither victim's name has been released.

In a statement Monday morning reported by Gephardt Daily, the Sandy Fire Department said both occupants were inside the home when the fire started and were able to exit, but both sustained burn injuries requiring hospital transport. One victim reportedly re-entered the home in an attempt to save a pet before being pulled out.

Sandy City Fire Department C shift crews responded to the blaze. Unified Fire Authority provided mutual aid, which the department acknowledged in its initial statement.

The $500,000 damage estimate from Aston represents significant destruction to the residence. The department has not released details about the home's size or whether it is a total loss.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Sandy Fire has not announced a timeline for completing its inquiry or scheduled a public briefing on the findings.
