Two people were hospitalized with burn injuries after a house fire broke out near 8800 S. 300 East in Sandy early Monday, August 3, destroying the home and killing a cat trapped inside.

The fire started at approximately 2:20 a.m., according to Sandy Deputy Fire Chief Chris Aston, who spoke with KSL. Sandy City Fire Department's C shift crews responded, with Unified Fire Authority providing mutual aid.

When firefighters arrived, smoke and flames were visible through every window and the front door, KUTV reported.

Two people were inside the home when the fire ignited. One occupant was in a wheelchair and received help from the second person to escape, Aston said. That second person then went back inside to try to save a pet and was burned in the process.

Both occupants were transported to local hospitals. Fire officials described one victim's injuries as "very serious," according to KUTV. That person was taken to the University of Utah Burn Center, Aston told KSL. A cat died in the fire.

The house was a total loss.

Firefighters worked approximately an hour and a half to fully extinguish the flames.

The Sandy City Fire Department confirmed the incident in a statement Monday morning, thanking Unified Fire Authority for its assistance. The cause of the fire remains undetermined and under investigation, the department said. No damage estimate has been released.

Sandy firefighters also assisted with a fourth-alarm apartment blaze in Midvale on Friday, July 31, three days before Monday's residential fire.
