A Sandy homeowner in his late 50s died Sunday, Sept. 20, after being crushed by the bucket of a skid steer he was helping to move.

Sandy police responded around 1 p.m. to the area of 1500 East and 11000 South, where the man had been struck while assisting with the piece of heavy equipment, ABC4 first reported. A skid steer is a compact, bucket-equipped machine commonly used for landscaping and grading.

First responders performed life-saving measures at the scene before transporting the man to a local hospital. He died from his injuries, police confirmed.

Sgt. Michael Olsen, a 15-year veteran of the Sandy Police Department, called it a "tragic accident."

The incident did not appear to be connected to any construction company, Olsen said. Separately, Olsen told KSL the man was a homeowner in the area.

Police have not released the man's name. The exact circumstances of how the bucket struck him remain under investigation, according to Olsen, who said details about what led to the accident have not been determined.

The investigation was ongoing as of police statements released Monday, Sept. 21. Residents with information about the incident can contact the Sandy Police Department.
