Sandy police say their investigation into the shooting death of a 5-year-old girl remains open, with no charges announced.

Officers responded just before 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, to a home near 200 W. Eastgate Drive (8800 South) after a report of a child with a gunshot wound, KSL reported. Paramedics had already rushed the girl to a local hospital before police arrived. She died later that night.

As we reported Aug. 31, another child fired the shot. Investigators spoke with everyone involved and determined the shooting was accidental.

"We were able to determine that this was a tragic accident involving young children," Sandy Police Sgt. Michael Olsen told KSL on Aug. 31.

Police declined to release the age of the child who fired the weapon or how that child obtained the gun. Whether investigators will screen potential charges remains unclear.
