A man in his 20s was shot near 8400 South State Street in Sandy on Thursday, Sept. 17. Police said someone in a passing vehicle opened fire on two pedestrians around 10 p.m.
The victim sustained injuries that were not considered life-threatening, according to Sandy Police Department Sgt. Michael Olsen, a 15-year veteran of the department. The second pedestrian was not struck.
Olsen told Gephardt Daily that "a vehicle pulled alongside two pedestrians before one or more people inside the vehicle opened fire." The vehicle then fled the scene.
Officers searched the surrounding area Thursday night but did not find the vehicle or any suspects. As of Friday, Sept. 18, police had not released a description of the vehicle or the people inside it.
No arrests have been made.
Investigators were also checking whether a nearby building was hit by gunfire during the incident. Additional property damage had not been confirmed as of Friday.
Olsen said investigators believe the shooting was isolated and had not identified a specific threat to the public. Whether the incident was gang-related remained under investigation, he said.
Police were also looking into possible connections between the shooter and the victims, ABC4 reported. Neither source provided details about what led up to the shooting or whether the victims knew the occupants of the vehicle.
Police have not said whether the victim was taken to a hospital. No information about his condition beyond "not life-threatening" had been released.
The shooting occurred along a busy commercial stretch of State Street in Sandy. The area sits near several businesses and is heavily trafficked during evening hours.
