Tanners Flat Campground in Little Cottonwood Canyon scored 90 out of 100 in a national ranking of America's most-reviewed public campgrounds, landing at No. 60 on the 136-site list.
The study, published July 21 by TRIO, a Starlink satellite dish mount manufacturer, and reported by ABC4 on Sunday, Sept. 20, analyzed more than 111,000 Google reviews from campgrounds listed on Recreation.gov. Analyst Collin Czarnecki scored each site on a weighted formula: 60% average star rating, 40% review sentiment across eight categories including cleanliness, facilities, scenery, and peace and quiet.
Tanners Flat earned a 4.5-star average across 220 reviews. Reviewers singled out the campground for cleanliness and quiet.
Tanners Flat was the only site near Sandy on the list.
The campground sits at 7,200 feet elevation in the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest, about six miles from Sandy. According to Recreation.gov, the site holds 31 single sites, three double sites, four overnight group sites and an amphitheater. Pine, aspen, oak and maple trees shade the grounds, and Little Cottonwood Creek runs along the campground's edge. The forest service describes fall foliage there as putting on "quite a show."
Because the canyon is part of the Salt Lake City watershed, dogs are not allowed and wading or playing in the creek is prohibited. Nearby trails lead to Red Pine Lake, White Pine Lake and Maybird Gulch. Snowbird Resort is a few miles up-canyon.
Eight Utah campgrounds made the top 100. Fruita Campground in Capitol Reef National Park ranked highest among them at No. 20 with a score of 93. Statewide, Utah and Arkansas tied for the second-most campgrounds in the study's top 25, with four each, behind California's five. Schoodic Woods Campground in Winter Harbor, Maine, ranked No. 1 nationally with a score of 98.
TRIO produced the campground ranking as original research on its company blog. The company makes Starlink satellite dish mounting systems for camper vans and RVs.
Tanners Flat opened for the 2026 season on May 15. Reservation data tracked by Camp Observer shows the campground is busiest in September, when about 20% of guest capacity is reserved. Reservations can be made through Recreation.gov at least five days in advance, and some first-come, first-served sites are available. The campground phone number is (385) 273-1100.
