Four highway ramps near Redwood Road in Salt Lake County close Tuesday, Oct. 6, for roughly 20 days of bridge work. The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) announced the closures in an Oct. 1 advisory, with all four ramps shutting down at 4 a.m.

Sandy residents heading to the airport or west Salt Lake County via I-215 or I-80 should plan alternate routes before Tuesday.

The four ramps closing are:

  • Eastbound I-80 to Redwood Road
  • Northbound I-215 to Redwood Road
  • Westbound SR-201 to northbound I-215
  • Redwood Road (near westbound SR-201) to northbound I-215

UDOT expects the first three ramps to reopen in about 20 days, around late October. One closure lasts much longer. The fourth ramp, Redwood Road to northbound I-215, will stay closed through July 2027.

I-215 West project replaces 18 bridge decks

The closures fall under UDOT's I-215 West Improved project, which is reconstructing I-215 West from SR-201 to just north of I-80. The project includes replacing 18 bridge decks, repairing 12 additional bridges and repaving 14 miles of ramps on I-80 and California Avenue, according to UDOT's March 2026 construction plan. The full project is estimated to wrap up in late summer 2027.

UDOT Project Manager John Montoya said in July, when the agency closed earlier ramps in the same interchange, that the work is about long-term upkeep. "Staying ahead of that maintenance helps keep our transportation system safe and reliable, and helps us get the most from the infrastructure Utahns have already invested in," Montoya told ABC4 on July 27.

What Sandy drivers should know

UDOT has not published Sandy-specific detours for the Oct. 6 closures. During earlier closures on the same project in July, the agency recommended Bangerter Highway, I-15 or SR-201 as alternate routes for drivers heading toward Salt Lake International Airport.

Two other ramp closures in the area are wrapping up. The northbound I-215 ramp to California Avenue reopens Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 4 a.m. The California Avenue ramp to northbound I-215 reopens Friday, Oct. 9, at 4 a.m.

Construction schedules are weather-dependent and subject to change. Drivers can check real-time updates on UDOT's traffic website or through the UDOT Traffic app.
