Sandy's Waterford School claimed its ninth girls soccer state championship Saturday, beating top-seeded Maeser Prep 1-0 at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman.

Senior Jessica Miller, a former goalkeeper who spent most of her career in net before moving to forward, scored the only goal less than two minutes into the second half. The ball found Miller in front of the goal after teammate Berklee Hasebi delivered a corner kick, and she pushed it through, as first reported by the Deseret News.

Miller had scored just three goals all season.

She was still accepting congratulations from teammates and classmates several minutes after the final whistle. "I knew that if we could break it open and get one goal, then we could keep it," Miller told the Deseret News.

The title caps a turnaround for the second-seeded Ravens. Waterford opened the season in August with four straight losses and didn't score until the fourth game. The Ravens then won 14 of their next 15 matches, with the only loss a 1-0 defeat at Maeser Prep in double overtime.

Second-year head coach Jeannie Woller, whose team also won the 2A title in 2025, credited the defense for the Oct. 24 result. Goalkeeper Clara Mansfield recorded the shutout and held off occasional Maeser Prep threats throughout the second half.

The championship was a rematch of a regular-season meeting the Lions won 1-0. Maeser Prep entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed with a 17-2 record and had outscored opponents 114-8 on the year, according to the Deseret News' semifinal preview. The Lions were seeking their first girls soccer state title.

Waterford's nine championships are the most in Utah girls soccer history, according to UHSAA records. The Sandy private school passed Rowland Hall and Alta, each with eight titles.

The Ravens reached the final with a 6-0 semifinal win over American Heritage on Oct. 22. Waterford scored four goals in a three-minute span to break that game open, with Evan Mackey and Lexee Hasebi each scoring twice.

Miller's move from goalkeeper to forward came to make room for Mansfield in net. The position switch produced the biggest goal of Waterford's season on a cool, windless afternoon in Herriman.
