Spanish-speaking families enrolling a new student at Alta High School this fall have a step-by-step guide waiting for them, published in Spanish on the school's website.
The enrollment packet walks families through the full registration process for the 2026-27 school year, covering required documents, out-of-boundary permits, housing protections, and how to schedule classes. With Canyons District's back-to-school registration opening Monday, Aug. 3, and the first day of school set for Monday, Aug. 17, families new to Alta have a narrow window to get paperwork in order.
What new families need to do
Families new to Canyons District must complete a paper enrollment application using the student's legal name exactly as it appears on their birth certificate. The online registration form is not available for new enrollees.
Required documents include vaccination records, a birth certificate, an unofficial academic transcript or report card, proof of address for families within Alta's attendance boundary, and a copy of any IEP or 504 Plan.
Completed packets must be delivered in person to the Registrar's Office inside the Counseling Center at Alta High, 11055 S. 1000 East, Sandy. Students who previously attended a Canyons District school should call Seaich to find out whether a paper application is needed.
Out-of-boundary families
Families living outside Alta's geographic attendance area must first apply for a permit at permits.canyonsdistrict.org before submitting enrollment paperwork. Permits coordinator Kelly Nixon is now fielding questions at [email protected] after returning from summer leave July 20. Families must respond to the confirmation email for the permit to be finalized, and should wait for that confirmation before delivering their enrollment packet.
Housing protections
Every enrolling student must complete a McKinney-Vento housing questionnaire before the enrollment form. The three-question form asks whether the family is in temporary housing, has experienced housing loss or economic hardship, or whether the student lives with someone other than a parent or legal guardian.
Under the federal McKinney-Vento Act, students doubled up with another family, living in a motel, shelter, vehicle, or a place without adequate utilities may qualify for additional educational protections and services. After enrollment
Once in-person enrollment is complete, families will receive a district communication in early August to finish back-to-school registration online through their Skyward parent account. After that step, families call (801) 826-5620 to schedule an appointment with a counselor to build the student's class schedule.
Ninth-grade orientation is Friday, Aug. 14. The first day of school for grades 1-12 is Monday, Aug. 17.
