Juan José Arias stepped onto the pitch at Providence Park in the 75th minute Saturday, July 25, giving Real Salt Lake fans their first look at the Sandy-based club's summer signing in competitive action.

The 22-year-old Colombian centerback's debut came in a 2-1 loss to the Portland Timbers, RSL's second straight defeat since returning from the FIFA World Cup break after a 3-1 loss at LAFC on Wednesday, July 22.

Arias, who was permanently acquired from Atlético Nacional on Tuesday, July 21, had been on loan with RSL during the first half of the 2026 season but had not appeared in a match. His contract runs through the 2028-29 MLS season with a club option for 2029-30.

"I'm very happy to be here long-term in Utah, a beautiful place and a Club that has everything I need to develop my potential," Arias said in RSL's July 21 signing announcement. "I'm very eager to wear this jersey and play for this Club."

Four days later, he got his chance.

RSL (8-6-2) took an early lead when midfielder Juan Manuel Sanabria scored his first MLS goal in the 18th minute, assisted by Morgan Guilavogui. But Guilavogui was sent off with a red card for violent conduct in the 31st minute, leaving RSL a man down for the final hour.

Portland's Felipe Mora capitalized with headers in the 56th and 67th minutes to complete the comeback. Goalkeeper Rafael Cabral stopped five shots in the losing effort.

Midfielder Noel Caliskan urged perspective in post-match comments reported by KSL Sports the same day, saying the team had shown it was still very good and couldn't get too low after back-to-back road losses with a lot of games left to play.

The loss extended RSL's road winless streak to six matches, dating to a victory at Atlanta United on Saturday, March 7. The club's home record at America First Field in Sandy remains 8-1-0.

RSL travels to St. Louis City SC on Saturday, August 1, before returning to Sandy for the Leagues Cup home opener against Liga MX side Tigres UANL on Tuesday, August 4, at 8 p.m. MT. The club also hosts Atlante CF on Saturday, August 8, and FC Juárez on Tuesday, August 11.
