Sandy residents looking for relief from triple-digit heat this weekend can walk into Dimple Dell Recreation Center on Sunday, Aug. 2, and cool off for free — no membership required.

Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson's office announced Friday, July 31, that Dimple Dell, at 10670 S. 1000 East, will operate as a designated Cool Zone from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. The center opens at 10 a.m. for regular use, but the Cool Zone window means anyone can access air-conditioned space and seating without paying for a full recreation center pass.

The move comes as the National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for the Salt Lake Valley, with daytime highs forecast to reach 104°F in Sandy and overnight lows staying near 77°F, too warm for the body to cool down overnight.

Dimple Dell is the only Sandy facility among five county recreation centers extending Sunday hours until 8 p.m. The others are Northwest Recreation Center and SLC Sports Complex in Salt Lake City, Taylorsville Recreation Center, and JL Sorenson Recreation Center in Herriman.

Water and water bottle filling stations may be available at some locations, according to Gephardt Daily, though not all amenities will be open during the extended hours.

The county took the same step on Monday, July 13, when Salt Lake City broke its all-time high temperature record.

"The County is asking residents to check on neighbors, family members, pets and anyone who may be more vulnerable to extreme heat, including older adults, young children and people who work outdoors," Eric Biggart, a Salt Lake County spokesperson, told KSL on Thursday, July 30.

As we reported Friday, the Extreme Heat Warning takes effect Saturday and runs through the weekend. Beyond Dimple Dell, Salt Lake County maintains more than 60 Cool Zone locations valley-wide, including libraries, pools, and senior centers. Normal hours resume Monday, Aug. 3.
