The motorcyclist killed during the annual Fire Ride on Sept. 12 has been identified as Adam Meyer, 52, of Grantsville. The ride, which honors fallen firefighters, departed Sandy that morning and was headed to Ogden.

Meyer died after a chain-reaction crash involving three motorcycles on U.S. 89 near Gordon Lane in Layton, according to ABC4, citing police. He was not wearing a helmet. He was pronounced dead en route to the hospital.

The crash happened at about 11:17 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, while hundreds of riders were traveling the route. Gephardt Daily and the Salt Lake Tribune, both citing the Utah Highway Patrol, reported the 11:17 a.m. time.

Police released Meyer's name on Wednesday, Sept. 16. Officials have not released details about what triggered the chain-reaction crash or the condition of the other two riders involved.

Sept. 12 reports from the Salt Lake Tribune and other outlets had identified Meyer only as a 52-year-old man from Tooele County. Grantsville is located in Tooele County.

The 2026 Fire Ride marked the event's 20th edition. It launched at 9 a.m. from South Valley Harley-Davidson at 8886 S. Sandy Parkway Drive, according to Fox 13. The ride supports the American Fallen Firefighters Memorial.

The Utah Highway Patrol estimated 300 to 400 riders participated, according to crash-day reports from ABC4 and Gephardt Daily. A Fox 13 preview published before the ride had said the event draws over 1,000 riders each year. The difference may reflect how participants and spectators are counted.

Northbound U.S. 89 near Gordon Avenue was closed for about two hours after the crash, ABC4 reported on Sept. 12.

No further updates on the crash investigation have been announced.
