The Utah Royals dominated every stat column on Wednesday, July 29, at America First Field. They still lost.

Washington Spirit forward Trinity Rodman buried the only goal of the match in the 28th minute, handing first-place Washington a 1-0 victory over third-place Utah in a top-of-the-table NWSL clash delayed roughly an hour by lightning in Sandy.

The Royals out-shot the Spirit 19-6, piled up 36 touches in Washington's box compared to nine for the visitors, and generated 1.62 expected goals to Washington's 0.66, according to ESPN. None of it mattered. Paige Metayer broke free down the right wing and delivered a cross that Rodman finished for her eighth goal of the season.

"Where they capitalized on five seconds, we probably had about one minute and 30 of those five-second moments, but we didn't capitalize on it," Royals head coach Jimmy Coenraets said after the match, as reported by the Salt Lake Tribune.

Coenraets, 31, called the goal a "lapse of five seconds against a world-class player" and pointed to Washington's playoff pedigree as the separator. The Spirit appeared in the last two NWSL Championship games and won the title in 2021. Rodman, 24, scored three goals en route to an Olympic gold medal with the U.S. Women's National Team.

Defender Kaleigh Riehl put it more bluntly: "They can have one chance and put it in the back of the net."

The loss drops Utah to 9-3-5 on the season with 30 points, six behind Washington's 36. Still, this is already the Royals' best single-season points total, surpassing both of the club's previous two full campaigns. With two more wins, Utah would tie its combined win total from those two seasons. Thirteen regular-season matches remain, including seven at home.

Coenraets framed the result as a growth moment but refused to let his team settle for moral victories.

"You've just competed with the best; just make sure next week you put those balls away, because you can't keep on saying you competed with the best," he said. "No, we want to compete, and we also want to win against the best."

The Royals host fifth-place Portland Thorns on Sunday, Aug. 2, at America First Field. Kickoff is 5 p.m. MDT.
