Real Salt Lake needs points, and Wednesday, Sept. 9, brings one of the toughest road tests left on the schedule.

RSL (8-9-5, 29 points) travels to Shell Energy Stadium to face the Houston Dynamo (12-7-3, 39 points) at 6:30 p.m. MT on Apple TV. The club sits 10th in the Western Conference, carrying a nine-game MLS winless streak dating to May 16.

The road record is worse. RSL has not won away from home since March 7 at Atlanta, a 10-game winless run that includes a Leagues Cup loss in Denver.

Houston enters second in the Western Conference with 39 points through 22 matches. The Dynamo posted their 11th clean sheet of the season in a 0-0 draw at Charlotte FC on Sept. 6, the second-most shutouts in a single season in franchise history.

Defender Lucas Halter earned MLSSoccer.com Team of the Matchday honors for that performance. Attacker Guilherme has scored or assisted on 63.3% of Houston's goals this season, according to the club's match preview. The Dynamo also added Burnley FC forward Lyle Foster on loan at the close of the transfer window.

Signs of life from the LAFC draw

RSL showed fight in the Saturday, Sept. 5, draw with LAFC at America First Field, twice erasing one-goal deficits. Saba Lobjanidze scored his first RSL goal in the 18th minute. Noel Caliskan buried a 75th-minute rebound to equalize.

DeAndre Yedlin made a goal-line clearance in the 87th minute to preserve the point.

"I think there's little wins within the performance as well, and I think the biggest one is coming back twice," head coach Pablo Mastroeni said, per KSL Sports. "That is the hardest thing to do, especially with a group that is not real familiar with each other."

RSL finished with 21 shots and 2.80 expected goals against LAFC. The draw still extended what the club's match notes call the fifth-longest winless drought in RSL's 22-year history.

New faces in the mix

RSL has been busy reshaping its roster. Chief Soccer Officer Kurt Schmid called the summer 2026 transfer window the most active in the club's history, with six external additions.

Lobjanidze arrived July 1. Colin Guske came on loan from Orlando City on Aug. 21. Jason Shokalook, Taylor Booth and Dušan Žagar joined Sept. 2. Defender Luc de Fougerolles arrived Sept. 5 on loan from Fulham FC.

De Fougerolles, 20, made five appearances for Canada at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, including four starts. He was named Canada Soccer's Young Men's Player of the Year for 2025.

"For me, the aim is clearly to achieve the playoffs, then make a run in and who knows then what can happen," de Fougerolles said upon arriving in Utah on Sept. 5.

Shokalook made his RSL debut in the 89th minute of the LAFC match, becoming the 241st player in club history. Guske, 19, entered in the 70th minute for his home debut.

Season series and what's next

The last time these teams met, RSL rolled to a 3-0 home win on May 13 at America First Field. Zavier Gozo scored twice in that match, per KSL Sports.

Wednesday's trip opens a two-game week. RSL returns to Sandy on Saturday, Sept. 12, to host New York City FC at 7:30 p.m. MT on Apple TV. The September schedule features four consecutive Saturday home matches, interrupted by midweek road trips to Houston and Seattle (Sept. 23).

Rookie forward Sergi Solans leads RSL with nine MLS goals and 13 across all competitions, a new club rookie record that surpassed Corey Baird's eight-goal total from his 2019 MLS Rookie of the Year season. Whether Solans and the new additions can reverse the slide starts Wednesday in Houston.
