Real Salt Lake secured a long-term piece of its backline on July 21, converting 22-year-old Colombian centerback Juan José Arias from a loan player into a permanent acquisition from Atlético Nacional through the 2028-29 MLS season, with a club option for 2029-30.
The deal lands just as RSL enters an 11-games-in-44-days stretch across MLS and Leagues Cup play, including three home matches against Liga MX opponents at America First Field in Sandy starting August 4.
Arias, a 6-foot defender who wears No. 21, spent the first half of 2026 on loan with RSL and is immediately eligible for first-team action. He fills one of the club's four U-22 initiative roster spots alongside midfielder Diego Luna, winger Dominik Marczuk, and forward Ari Piol.
"I'm very happy to be here long-term in Utah, a beautiful place and a club that has everything I need to develop my potential," Arias said in the club's announcement. "I hope to see you all very soon at the stadium!"
RSL Chief Soccer Officer Kurt Schmid said Arias strengthens both the depth and competitive quality of the defensive unit, noting the centerback made multiple appearances for Real Monarchs in Herriman during an injury-rehabilitation period earlier in 2026. Schmid called Arias "an ideal fit" for the U-22 roster spot and said the club expects him to compete at the highest level for the remainder of the season.
Before arriving in Utah, Arias signed with Atlético Nacional as an 18-year-old in February 2022 and appeared in 74 games across all competitions, helping the Colombian powerhouse win five domestic trophies: the 2022 Apertura and 2024 Clausura league titles, the 2023 Superliga, and Copa Colombia titles in 2023 and 2024.
He becomes the eighth Colombian in RSL history and the second to arrive from Atlético Nacional, following midfielder Nelson Palacio, who transferred to Toronto FC earlier in July 2026.
RSL sits fourth in the MLS Western Conference with an 8-4-2 record and 26 points, the second-best 14-game start in club history, according to the team. The club's home record stands at 8-1-0 in 2026.

Arias is available for selection as soon as July 22, when RSL travels to face LAFC at 8:30 p.m. MT (Apple TV, Fox Sports 1). Road trips to Portland on July 25, and St. Louis on August 1, follow before the club returns to Sandy for Leagues Cup Phase One:

- Saturday, August 8 — vs. Atlante CF (kickoff time TBA)
- Tuesday, August 11 — vs. FC Juárez
RSL then hosts Minnesota United on August 15, and FC Dallas on August 19, giving Sandy fans five home matches in a 16-day window.
