Real Salt Lake sent 21-year-old forward Marcos Zambrano to the New England Revolution on July 16, parting with a U.S. youth international as the club reshapes its roster ahead of an 11-games-in-44-days stretch that includes three Leagues Cup home matches at America First Field in Sandy.
In return, RSL receives New England's 2029 second-round MLS SuperDraft pick. The club will also retain a percentage of any future transfer or trade involving Zambrano, according to RSL's announcement.
Zambrano arrived on the Wasatch Front during the 2025 summer transfer window from Portuguese side Guimarães B. He spent nearly all of his time with the Real Monarchs, RSL's MLS NEXT Pro affiliate, where he appeared in 13 matches and scored eight goals. Three of those came in the early stages of the 2026 MLS NEXT Pro season.
The young striker also represented the United States at the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Rancagua, Chile, appearing in all five matches of the U.S. team's quarterfinal run and scoring one goal. RSL homegrown star Zavier Gozo played alongside Zambrano in that tournament, leading the U.S. with three assists.
No RSL executive or player commented publicly on the trade.
Roster moves signal bigger picture
The Zambrano deal was one of two roster transactions RSL completed in the same week. On July 21, the club permanently acquired 22-year-old Colombian centerback Juan José Arias from Atlético Nacional, converting a loan into a deal through the 2028-29 season.
"Juan José strengthens both the depth and competitive quality of our defensive unit," RSL Chief Soccer Officer Kurt Schmid said Tuesday in announcing the Arias signing.
Head coach Pablo Mastroeni, speaking to KSL Sports on July 20, framed the club's direction ahead of the post-break schedule: "I don't want to be predictable. I want to continue to evolve. I want to see an understanding of our game model, an evolution of our game model, so that we can continue to be this expressive, dynamic attacking team."
RSL sits fourth in the Western Conference with an 8-4-2 record and 26 points through 14 matches, the second-best 14-game start in club history according to the team. The club has won eight of nine home matches at America First Field in 2026.
What's ahead for Sandy fans
RSL's schedule tightens fast. After road trips to Portland on July 25 and St. Louis on August 1, the club opens Leagues Cup play at home against Liga MX's Tigres UANL on August 4 at 8 p.m. MT. Atlante CF visits August 8, and FC Juárez follows on August 11. MLS regular-season home dates against Minnesota United on August 15 and FC Dallas on August 19 round out five home games in 16 days at America First Field.
