Salt Lake Temple open house adds ticket waves Sept. 15, Oct. 1

Sandy-area residents who missed the first wave of Salt Lake Temple open house tickets get two more chances to grab a spot.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will release additional reservations on Tuesday, Sept. 15 and Thursday, Oct. 1, both at 6 p.m. MDT, according to a church newsroom announcement. The releases are part of a planned rollout to accommodate as many visitors as possible.

The new waves come after 1 million reservations were claimed in less than 24 hours when tickets first opened Sept. 1. The first 250,000 spots disappeared within 30 minutes of the 11 a.m. release, the Deseret News reported. Demand was immediate.

Rich Sutton, senior director of the church's Temple Department, urged patience at a Sept. 1 press event inside the temple. "Please do not get stressed if the first release of tickets reserves very quickly," Sutton said. "Additional tickets will open regularly throughout this timeframe."

What the open house offers

The open house runs April 5 through Oct. 1, 2027, and marks the first time in 134 years the general public will be allowed inside the Salt Lake Temple. The building has been closed since late 2019 for a renovation that included 98 rubber-and-steel base isolators, allowing the temple to shift up to 5 feet in any direction during a major earthquake, CNN reported. The project also added an underground wing with 100,000 feet of additional space.

Church leaders expect up to 25,000 people to pass through the building each day. President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, who chairs the Salt Lake Temple Executive Committee, said at the Sept. 1 press event that church and civic leaders expect 4 to 5 million visitors over the six-month run.

Salt Lake City tourism officials estimate the event will bring $300 million in new spending to downtown Salt Lake City. Derek Miller, president of the Salt Lake Chamber and the Downtown Alliance, told CNN the open house is a "practice run" for the 2034 Winter Olympics.

How to get tickets

Reservations can be made at TempleSquare.org or through the Temple Square app, available for Apple and Android devices. Residents can also subscribe to the Temple Square email list for updates on future releases.

Tours start at the Conference Center across the street from Temple Square and take more than an hour. They will be offered in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Mandarin and American Sign Language, with options for visitors who are blind or have low vision and a neurodiverse tour option.

Many experiences on Temple Square during the celebration will not require a reservation. Virtual tours are expected to launch in October 2026 for those who cannot travel to Salt Lake City.

Temple Square hours during the celebration are 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., with tours and celebration experiences running 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
