Sandy residents cannot light any personal fireworks anywhere in the city through July 25, 2026. The ban covers the entire Pioneer Day holiday window.

Sandy City confirmed the citywide restriction on July 21, in a post on its official Instagram account tagging Sandy Fire Department, Sandy Police, and Mayor Monica Zoltanski. The city said a ban in place since before the Fourth of July will remain because conditions are too dry.

A grass fire in the Dimple Dell area on July 21, reinforced the decision. Sandy City said the blaze showed that fire danger persists across the community.

Why Sandy went further than state rules

Under Utah State Code, Class C common fireworks (consumer items like sparklers and fountains) are normally permitted from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on July 22, through July 25, with hours extended to midnight on Pioneer Day July 24. Those state-law hours do not apply in Sandy because the city chose a full ban.

Gov. Spencer Cox announced a "hybrid" executive order on July 20, returning fireworks authority to individual cities. The order also gives Utah State Forester Jamie Barnes the power to impose additional restrictions in high-risk areas.

"The Wasatch Front has not had much moisture at all. We're still as bad or maybe worse than we were on July 4th in some cities, much better off than others," Cox told FOX 13 News at a Days of '47 Rodeo event on July 20. "We'll let the mayors and cities determine whether to have bans and where in their cities."

Cities that wanted a full ban had to notify the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire & State Lands before the holiday, according to FOX 13 News.

Barnes said in a statement released July 20 that recent precipitation improved conditions in some areas but not everywhere, and he encouraged residents to check with their city before using fireworks.

Statewide restrictions still in effect

Beyond Sandy's local ban, fireworks remain illegal on all public lands and private unincorporated lands across Utah because of continued high wildfire risk, according to ABC4's statewide fireworks guide published July 21. Statewide Stage 2 fire restrictions are in place on state, BLM, and private unincorporated lands. U.S. Forest Service lands are under Stage 1 or Stage 2 restrictions.

Road closure near 1300 East

Sandy City posted a separate notice that 1300 East is closed between Sego Lily Drive and 10600 South, with emergency vehicles operating in the area. The city did not specify the cause of the closure. Residents should use alternate routes.
