Sandy nonprofit's golf tournament raises funds for foster kids' camp

Utah Royal Kids aims to raise $30,000 for foster children's summer camp at a golf tournament Tuesday, Sept. 22, in North Salt Lake.

The Sandy-based 501(c)(3) hosts its Golf Classic and Luncheon at Eaglewood Golf Course and Grill, 1110 E. Eaglewood Drive. All proceeds fund a one-week summer camp and year-round mentoring club for Utah foster children ages 7 to 11.

As of Sept. 15, the organization had raised $19,215, about 64 percent of its goal.

23 years, 856 kids

The nonprofit started in 2003. Since then, Utah Royal Kids has served 856 foster children across Utah, according to the organization's website. It admits 40 to 50 campers each year and draws volunteers from 36 congregations, who logged 12,080 hours in the most recent year reported.

The organization's board includes three-time U.S. Olympian and Olympic silver medalist Bill Schuffenhauer, who serves as a member-at-large. Lisa Nielsen chairs the board, and Vice Chairperson Heather Colling has volunteered with the group for more than 21 years.

One foster caregiver wrote on the nonprofit's website: "She hasn't worn anything other than her camp shirts since she got home."

How to participate

The tournament runs from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Registration is $150 for an individual golfer, $550 for a foursome and $45 for the luncheon only. Club rental is available through Eaglewood Golf Course.

Non-golfers are welcome at the post-tournament luncheon, which includes an auction and prize drawing.
