A Latin dance social is coming to Sandy on Saturday, Nov. 7, with all ticket proceeds going to SLC Mutual Aid.
Dance By Daylight pairs a beginner bachata class with hours of social dancing and live performances. The event is open to all skill levels, according to the event listing on Sandy Journal. No partner is required.
The afternoon starts with a beginner bachata class at 3 p.m. Attendees will learn both lead and follow roles. Social dancing runs from 4 to 7 p.m., featuring bachata, salsa and Brazilian zouk music.
At 5 p.m., Gio Danceworld Muse Experience and Samba Fogo take the floor for live performances. Gio Danceworld was founded by Giovanna Jackson, originally from Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas, Mexico, who trained in Latin ballroom and rhythm dance at Brigham Young University and Utah Valley University, according to the studio's website. Samba Fogo describes itself as a cultural arts organization inspired by Brazilian music and dance that has been performing and teaching in the Western United States for over a decade, according to the group's website.
Organizers set up tiered ticket pricing. A "Community Care" ticket costs $10 in advance or $12 at the door and is aimed at students, seniors or those facing financial difficulty. A "Standard" ticket runs $15 in advance or $17 at the door. A "Star Supporter" ticket at $20 helps subsidize the discounted tickets. Tickets are available online or at the door.
The beneficiary, SLC Mutual Aid, is a 501(c)(10) organization in the Salt Lake Valley. The group says it was founded in March 2020 in response to COVID-19 and has since shifted to broader community work, including support for unhoused residents and community free refrigerators.
Fusion dancing is welcome, so attendees do not need to know all three styles. Organizers suggest wearing shoes that slide on the floor, such as suede-sole dance shoes or smooth rubber soles.
Residents can follow @dancebydaylight on Instagram for updates.
