More than 6,000 homes and businesses in Sandy, Midvale and surrounding parts of Salt Lake County lost electricity Monday, Oct. 26, after a substation failed.

Rocky Mountain Power said the outage struck shortly after 9 a.m., leaving roughly 6,000 customers without power, according to KUTV. The utility initially estimated repairs could take up to six hours.

Crews finished far sooner.

Power was restored by 10:40 a.m., less than two hours after the outage began, KUTV reported. That beat the utility's early estimate by a wide margin. ABC4 had reported an estimated restoration time of around 3:30 p.m. while the outage was still active.

ABC4 placed the number of affected customers at 6,083. KUTV, citing Rocky Mountain Power officials, reported 6,038. Both figures came from the utility.

Rocky Mountain Power confirmed the restoration on its X account, writing that the outage "was caused by a loss of substation." The utility did not identify which substation failed or explain what caused the equipment loss.

"We appreciate your patience while our crews worked safely and as quickly as possible to restore service," the utility said on X.

Rocky Mountain Power said the cause of the outage remains under investigation, according to ABC4.

The outage affected customers across Sandy, Midvale, Salt Lake and surrounding areas, according to both the utility and local news reports. For Sandy residents who rely on medical equipment or temperature-sensitive needs, the American Red Cross recommends having a plan for where to go if power stays out for an extended period.
