Sergi Solans scored in each half and Real Salt Lake dominated St. Louis City SC 3-0 on Saturday, Oct. 24, at America First Field before 20,614 fans.
The victory moved RSL to 11-14-6 on the season and kept the club's Western Conference playoff hopes alive with three regular-season matches remaining. RSL entered the night one spot outside a postseason berth.
Solans' two goals gave him 14 on the season, passing Duncan McGuire's 13 in 2023 for the second-most goals by an MLS SuperDraft pick in his debut season. Only Cyle Larin, who scored 17 with Orlando City in 2015, has more. Solans is also three shy of the single-season RSL record of 17, shared by Christian "Chicho" Arango and Alvaro Saborio, according to Real Salt Lake's match recap.
The scoring opened in the 41st minute. Luc de Fougerolles intercepted a St. Louis pass near midfield and surged forward, playing a give-and-go with Morgan Guilavogui. Guilavogui delivered a low cross from the left side of the box, and Solans tapped it in at the back post.
St. Louis lost a man moments later. Tomas Ostrak picked up his second yellow card in the 45th minute for a challenge on de Fougerolles and was sent off, leaving St. Louis City (14-8-9) down to 10 players for the entire second half.
RSL wasted little time exploiting the advantage. Seven minutes into the second half, de Fougerolles played the ball wide to Dominik Marczuk, who ripped a right-footed shot from outside the box into the top-right corner for his second goal of the season.
Solans sealed it in the 59th minute.
Saba Lobjanidze crossed from the right side of the box to the back post, and Solans finished again to make it 3-0.
RSL outshot St. Louis 20-3 on the night. Goalkeeper Rafael Cabral made two saves for his third clean sheet in 30 starts, ABC4's Dana Greene reported. It was RSL's first-ever shutout against St. Louis after conceding in each of the previous seven regular-season meetings.
Head coach Pablo Mastroeni kept the same starting lineup for a third straight match. Fans rose to their feet in the 60th minute when centerback Justen Glad entered as a substitute for his first appearance since suffering an adductor injury May 23 at Minnesota. Glad, a 2024 MLS All-Star and RSL homegrown product, played the final 30 minutes.
RSL next travels to Austin FC on Wednesday, Oct. 28, with kickoff set for 6:30 p.m. MT at Q2 Stadium.
